CANON rebel DIGITALS?
I have the choice between the original canon rebel digital and the rebel XTi… I save $200 if I get the original. I am really into photography and alot of people said I should make it my career. Whats the difference between the two cameras? A camera is about as good as its photographer… and I can work with any camera. I just don't know which one to get… Or if I would regret not getting the XTi after I bought the original…. Help! I also dont know too much about all the technical terms… so… haha ![]()
Hi, not sure on the XTI range as its aimed at the US, The same models in the UK are named differently! However If you are looking to start as a business and you specifically want canon, going by the UK brands I would go for the 40D 'entusiats to semi pro level' which retails over here for approx £900 body only approx $500 above that 5D you ar going astronomical on prices.
Why not go for a Nikon D80 or D300?? D80 over here approx £477 body only half the price in US D300 not sure as it was same as over here approx £1000 may have dropped since release though.
I am currently breaking into the pro industry and am aiming at the Fuji S5pro, over here it retails for £499 extremely cheap for what it does, read some reviews on it, it is a truely unrivalled camera for pic quality, not sure on USA price somewhere between $250 & $350.
Plus it is based on the features of the older pro Nikon D200 so it will take all nikon lenses from the last 20 years and as you may be aware, nikon are unrivalled in lense quality, so together they make a formidable machine!!
For $200 not sure what you will get in US but im not expecting you to get much for your dollar, if your serious about photography then personally I would save a touch more dollar for a better build quality.
Saying that, it is not the camera alone that produces outstanding images but the creator behind the lense!!
Edit; Actually thinking about it, Is the XTI you are on about the same as the 400D in the UK?? not sure, not a bad camera and aimed at the mid level to ebthusiastic amateur, not quite semi pro spec though so it depends what you realy wanna do?? you will still get decent results from it though, just not outstanding to the photography world!!!
the XTi's the newer of the two so i suggest you get that one instead. The original rebel's a little larger, so it would feel a bit sturdier (if you've got big hands) but you'd get used to the xti soon. 6.3mp vs. 8 (xti) is not that big of a jump, but considering the new dslr models that are coming out (10 to 12mp) i'd go for the one with the bigger mp.
for starting out, though, both are good cameras.
Good luck, and keep shooting!
Consider that the original Rebel is five years old now and any used copy of this camera could be near the end of it's shutter life of about 50,000 shots. You could be facing a repair that costs more than the camera is worth and certainly more than the $200 you would save in price.
Side-by-side comparison only shows that the XTi is a 10 MP camera vs. the Rebel's 6 MP. You can get good images from a good 6 MP camera, but there are times when those extra pixels can save you, as you are able to crop away part of the original image to leave behind a great image. Otherwise the LCD size is the only thing I see on the chart, but you can be sure that the processor in the XTi is a couple of generations better than the original also.
Lucky for you I've used both of these cameras.
Go with the XTi.
In laymans terms, due to my lack of a desire to elaborate:
The original is bigger, bulkier, slower and louder.
The screen is disgustingly tiny and the pictures are not as crisp.
The XTi is nicer and has a very handy sensor cleaner.
Colours generally look nicer off of the XTi as well.
Why not look at the new XSi, but if you are really serious about making a living from photography then you should take a serious look at better models and all brands. If it has to be Canon then from personal experience of the XTi (400D) and the 40D then you should opt for the 40D
