Telephoto Lenses for Canon XTI?

I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI camera. Is the 75-300 USM a good telephoto/zoom lens? Can I even use this lens on the XTI? I mostly take action shots and portraits. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out!!

    You can use EF and EF-S lenses with the Rebel XTi (400D)…making the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM compatible.
    However (from reviews of this lens), I don't think it's a good lens.
    From one review…
    "Image quality, mediocre"
    "build quality, mediocre"
    "If you care about great image quality and sharp photos, the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens is not for you."

    From another review site (actual users of the lenses give the lenses a rating), the lens you mention rates an average of a paltry 5.6/10.
