The 40d is hundreds of dollars more expensive, has much more megapixels, a much larger screen, live view, and much much much more than the nikon d40, you should get the canon eos 40d, if you could afford it , which is around 1,000$, but is all worth the money, The d40 couldn't hold a candle to the 40d.

Hi Amm. Between these two cameras and models… I would say you are trying to choose between apples and oranges, as they are not in the same catagory or price range. I believe the Nikon D40 is somewhere in the $550.00 price range, where the Canon 40D is about $1600.00. The Nikon is an entry level digital SLR, where the Canon is pro-sumer (lower end beginner professional - one that consumers could reasonably afford - way under $6000.00 professional models). If you like what you have heard about the Canon line, one that is closer to the Nikon D40 is the Rebet Xti. These are excellent, user friendly cameras… I have one… and it has been a joy to use. I am not dogging the Nikon by any means as we have the pro models, but for every day shooting, affordability, moderate size and weight, easy to use, I can recommend the Rebel. Don't let any one suggestion make up your mind. Go shopping, check out the models and price ranges you like. Hold the cameras in you hands. Ask the sales rep. questions that are important to you… then go home, think about it and make an intelligent decision. For now, check with the link I have below to get a professional point of view from photographers that have field tested the models you are asking about. They are honest and to the point so comsumers can choose what is right for them. Happy camera shopping. Thanks for reading and I hope I could help.
PSS: Just realizing that I had not specifically answered your question: The Canon EOS 40D is technologically superior to the Nikon D40.

The question is, which camera system do you want to choose as the system you will be using from this point on … to change systems after you have a few lenses and bodies, can become very expensive indeed.
Look to the professional cameras and lenses made by both Nikon and Canon. See which offers the best solution to your current and future photographic needs and at what cost.
If you want to compare cameras to cameras then compare the Nikon D40 to the Canon D350 (XT) or the Nikon D300 to the Canon 40D. That is a much more realistic set of comparisons.

I would definitely recommend going with the Nikon D40. If you get the D40 from Amazon, it is only $450, with a 18-55mm lens (an excellent lens), and because it is so cheap, it would give you some extra cash to buy lenses, flashes, etc.
One thing about the D40 to keep in mind, is that if you are used to the second lcd screen on top, (for aperture, shutter speed settings, etc.) than not having it on the D40 could be quite annoying, if you are not used to using that screen, than I do not believe it would be a big problem not to have it.
Secondly, Some cameras (such as the Nikon D80) have a motor built in the camera, so it can auto-focus with any lens, where as the D40 does not have a motor inside it, so it is limited to Nikon AF-S and AF-I lenses. This should not be a big problem unless you already have some lenses (that are not AF-S or AF-I) that you want to auto-focus with the D40. If you do not, than stick to buying from Nikon's large collection of AF-S and AF-I lenses. Note that the Nikon D40 can still operate other lenses, just you will have to manual focus.
Lastly, go to a camera store, such as Best Buy or Henerys. Both of those stores will let you handle the cameras, and test them out. Note: Henery's is much more knowledgeable about cameras, go there if you have lots of questions.
Any other questions, feel free to send me a message.
