How do I capture silhouettes with a 35mm film camera? (I use a pentax camera if that matters)?

No the type of camera does not matter. I capture silhouettes with digitals… What is important is that you get the light behind your subject. Also, the more light you let in (in manual) the stronger your silhouett effect will be.

Well that depends. Is it a cow in a field at sunset? http://www.flickr.com/photos/cabbiinc/2530463410/ Meter for the sky in M mode (assuming that your camera has modes, if it doesnt then your camera is always in M mode), recompose and shoot.

If your trying to light it, you will want to have the background 2 or 3 stops brighter than the subject (maybe more, I havent done much of it as of yet). http://www.flickr.com/photos/31454864@N00/423482503/ this one is not my image.

You have to meter the light that is behind the thing you want to silhouette, as long as that light is brighter.
