No the type of camera does not matter. I capture silhouettes with digitals… What is important is that you get the light behind your subject. Also, the more light you let in (in manual) the stronger your silhouett effect will be.

Well that depends. Is it a cow in a field at sunset? http://www.flickr.com/photos/cabbiinc/2530463410/ Meter for the sky in M mode (assuming that your camera has modes, if it doesnt then your camera is always in M mode), recompose and shoot.

You have to meter the light that is behind the thing you want to silhouette, as long as that light is brighter.
