Sony vaio cr 520 can’t play cd or dvd?

Help.. brand new computer and each time i put a cd or dvd in drive.. it spits it back out. With all my other laptops i have no probem playing cd or dvd.. is there a problem with the dvd drive?
it apears that certain cd's play and certain dvd plays… maybe i need to update something?
