Is there anyway I can make My sony 850 watt 5.1 surround sound system louder for watching tv and video games?

I have a Sony 850 watt surround sound system. Its a 5 disk changer. I can watch DVDs on it and its very loud, like rumble the house loud. But on cable I have to turn it up to 28 (out of 34) were on a DVD that would rumble the house and I can feel the wind from the speakers, but when I watch cable its quiet and I don’t get the full surround sound. It does it on everything else too. When I plug something directly into it, its very loud. I think its because the signal is lost though out the wires and when I put a DVD in or plug my mp3 player directly into it, its in there, and it doesn’t have to travel from the TV to the amp.

I think I just answered my own question, but if anyone has any ideas tell me please.

It does not have HDMI.

Use a preamp after the cable box and video games, then use the preamp output and hook it into the dvd changers audio input. I had to do the same thing.

If the sound from the cable goes into your tv and then into the amp, the tv might be limiting the output. Some tvs have a “fixed audio out” option in the settings. That level is usually pretty low but constant, meaning you have to use the stereo amp to change the volume.
I like having the sound from my dvd player and cable box and xbox go thru my tv so I only have to use one remote. But when I want to crank the volume or get true surround sound I switch the amp to receive the digital outputs from those sources. You must have a digital connection to get true surround sound because the amp needs to know what speakers to send the sound to and at what volume.
Sounds like you might be in the market for a real surround sound Receiver. We have the Harmon Kardon AVR 320. http://www.amazon.com/Harman-Kardon-AVR320-Audio-Receiver/dp/B00005Q5WZ

We love having the two optical digital ins and the two coaxial digital ins on top of the six or so other analog ins. Really a different experience. Have fun. E-Mail if you have more questions.
