My Sony Vaio is not recognizing my disc drive…..?

I don't know why it's doing that-but I put a cd in and it won't read it and when I try to burn a disc it tells me to plug in a burner…….also when I insert a memory card it doesn't read it either. I have tried to recover the drives but it doesn't work–any suggestions as to what to do??

    First, can you see them in Device Manager?
    If not, can you see them in the BIOS?

    I presume you can not see them in My Computer

    have you tried 'system restore' to an earlier date when this problem had not occured
